Alexander Rossi suffered a retirement from IndyCar’s race in Toronto as he clattered the wall at Turn 11, which left him speechless.
The American hit the wall as he put the power down on the pit straight. The rear right corner of his No. 20 ECR Chevy was destroyed.
Rossi immediately retired and missed the chance to score a strong haul of points. The race turned out to be chaotic, and the ECR driver didn’t capitalise.
Multiple drivers collided with that wall over the weekend and simply glanced off the concrete without damaging the car.
Rossi didn’t have such luck when it mattered most in the race and was eventually classified in 25th place.
A surprised Rossi said via RACER.com: “I just tracked out a little bit too wide and ended up destroying the rear of the car. I’m still trying to process it, because I’ve never seen that amount of damage to really any sort of hit like that. The suspension is cut, and the gearbox is pulled apart. It’s very disappointing.
“We were on the right strategy, and the No. 20 Java House ECR guys were doing a good job with what we had. A good result was on the table, and I am pretty speechless about the penalty for my transgression.”
Rossi hasn’t scored a top 10 in six races
Rossi is getting towards the end of his first season with Ed Carpenter Racing. He joined the team from Arrow McLaren at the end of 2024.
It has been a stuttering campaign so far, with the highlight being an eighth-place finish at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.
The 2016 Indy 500 winner is yet to have a headline result in 2025. Rossi is also behind his teammate Christian Rasmussen in the standings.
Just four rounds remain this year, with Laguna Seca up next. Rossi will be eager to see an upturn in fortunes towards the end of the year.
