Alex Palou is closing in on his fourth IndyCar championship for Chip Ganassi Racing after a dominant season, but admits no one is happy about a particular aspect of the series.
The Spaniard has been peerless this season and has already won eight races, including a blistering run of form in the month of May, winning at Barber Motorsports Park, the IMS Road Course, and the Indy 500.
The Indy 500 triumph was a significant moment, as it was the first win on an oval for Palou after multiple years of trying and failing to cross the finish line first on that type of circuit.
In IndyCar, Palou has been very difficult to beat over the past couple of seasons, in particular, but the Chip Ganassi Racing driver admits not everyone is pleased about his success.
He said in an IndyCar press conference: “Everybody like on the driver autographs and all that stuff or on messages. But I think I have not seen that they treat me different or they don’t talk to me or that they are grumpy or anything.
“Obviously I know they don’t like it. I know that nobody is happy about it, only us, only the 10 car and CGR. But, it is what it is. It’s competition. We are just trying to do the best we can.”
Palou can break the record for most wins in a single season this year
The record for the most wins in a single season is 10 and is held by A. J. Foyt and Al Unser. Palou could break this record in 2025 if he wins all three remaining races, thus clinching his fourth championship.
IndyCar’s final three races will be held at Portland before two ovals to close out the championship at the Milwaukee Mile and the Nashville Superspeedway.
A fourth championship win this year would firmly put Palou among the greats in IndyCar, as he would equal Sebastian Bourdais and Dario Franchitti with four titles.
Portland has been a successful race for the Spaniard in the past, as he won Palou’s second championship in 2023 after taking victory for Chip Ganassi Racing.
